Elena Yurievna Guskova has a PhD in Historical Sciences, specialist in the history of Yugoslav people. In 1972 she graduated at the Faculty of History of the Moscow State University Lomonosov, at the Department of History of the Southern and Western Slavs. At present, he is the head of the Center for the Study of the Contemporary Balkan Crisis at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Military Historical Journal, member of the editorial board of the historical journal Tokovi Istorije of the Institute of Modern History of Serbia (Belgrade), as well as the Obozrevatel scientific journal, member of the International Scientific Council of the Sociološki pregled journal, member of the International Commission of Experts on Revealing the Truth about Jasenovac during the Second World War, a scientific expert for the defense in the trial of general Stanislav Galich at the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (2002), a member of the Public Chamber of the Russia-Belarus Union State, etc. In 1994, she worked as an expert for the Balkans at the headquarters of the UN Peacekeeping Force on the territory of the former Yugoslavia in Zagreb. Managing editor of more than 35 books and collections on Yugoslavia, author-compiler of 13 collections of documents on the crisis in the Balkans. She has published over 600 scientific and journalistic works, of which 21 are books. Among the latter – The History of the Yugoslav Crisis (1990-2000) (2001), The Balkan Roads and crazy off-road (2012), 1999 NATO aggression against Yugoslavia and the peace process (2013), Kosovo and Metohija: War and Conditions of Peace (2014).

In 2006, she was elected as a foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Historical Sciences. In 2009 and 2016 she was elected as a member of Senate in the Republika Srpska (B&H) for a term of seven years. In 2015, she was elected a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska.

Elena Guskova taught special courses at the Moscow State University Lomonosov (1993, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2003), Irkutsk State University (1993), Perm State University (1995), Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (2002), Ural State University (2005), State University for the Humanities of the Russian Academy of Sciences, University of Pristina with a temporary stay in Kosovska Mitrovica (2015–2017). All lectures are devoted to the problems of the history of Yugoslavia.

From 1990 to December 2019, she participated in 169 international conferences, 94 Russian conferences and round tables, gave 183 lectures, participated in 419 radio and 281 television programs, gave comments in 336 newspapers, agencies and websites, advised 10 films on television on the problems of Yugoslavia.

Elena Guskova was awarded in 1997 the Order of Njegoš the Second degree by the Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina); the government of Moscow in 1997 – the Medal “In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow”; in 2010 she was awarded the Imperial Culture Prize, E. Volodin of the Union of Writers of Russia in the nomination “For courage, steadfastness and loyalty in serving the unity of Orthodox peoples.” On October 2014 she received the main prize “Golden Knight” in the nomination “History of Slavic peoples” for the book “NATO aggression against Yugoslavia in 1999 and the peace process.” She was also awarded the Medal of Honor of the Slavic Fund of Russia “For great contribution to the preservation and development of the Slavic cultural heritage” (2015) and the Jubilee Medal “20 years of participation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in UN peacekeeping operations” of the UN Council of Veterans of Police (2012).
