Researchers from the Institute of International Politics and Economics, Dr. Miloš Petrović, Marina Radovanović, МА, and Ivana Dunjić, МА, took part in the scientific conference “European Values: Between Contestation and Affirmation,” organized by the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Science.
The conference was held as the final event within the framework of the Erasmus+ project EUROPIA (On-Wheels Summer School for the Socio-Cultural Evolution of the European Values, Principles, Identity, and Awareness), which brings together six partner institutions and one associate partner: the University of Warsaw (Poland), the University of Brașov (Romania), the University of Belgrade (Serbia), the University of Zagreb (Croatia), the University of Navarra (Spain), the PAX Rhodopica Foundation, and the University of Sofia (Bulgaria).
Throughout the conference, numerous topics were addressed concerning the origins, challenges, and future of European values, paying particular attention to the broader context of contemporary international (and European) relations, the developments across Europe and the Western Balkans, and the role of the Republic of Serbia as an EU candidate country.
Under the panel “European Values – Fundamental Issues,” Ivana Dunjić, MA, presented a co-authored paper developed in collaboration with Dr. Miljana Đurčević Cucić from the Faculty of Political Science. Their presentation examined the conceptual foundations of the motto “united in diversity” through the lens of early diplomatic theory, as articulated in the work of François de Callières.
As a participant in the panel, “European Values in International and EU Law,” Marina Radovanović, MA, explored the ‘normative activism’ of the Court of Justice of the EU in the context of the EU Return Policy, with special emphasis on the protection of fundamental rights of illegally staying third-country nationals.
Senior Research Fellow Dr. Miloš Petrović was a speaker in the panel, “ The Foundation of European Values in the Systems of EU Candidate Countries.” Dr. Petrović presented on the topic of Ukraine’s membership bid as a manifestation of commitment to the values of the European Union.
The conference featured over twenty scholarly papers, primarily by researchers from the University of Belgrade, the University of Arts in Belgrade, the Institute of International Politics and Economics, the Institute of European Studies, the Institute of Comparative Law, the University of Montenegro, as well as experts from government institutions.
