Institute of International Politics and Economics from Belgrade (IIPE) is one of the oldest institutes in South Eastern Europe. Since it was established in 1947, IIPE has had a special place in the academic life of the country. From a small group of researchers who laid foundations of the Yugoslav science of international relations, the Institute has gradually turned into the largest scientific institution of this kind in our country and one of the most reputable research centres in the world. Up to the present day research in the fields of political, economic and law sciences have been in the core of its activities. IIPE studies the processes and phenomena in the field of international politics and economics, this also including legal aspects of international relations, which are of interest for the position and foreign policy of the state. Providing a research and documentation basis for defining the country's foreign policy priorities, for many years IIPE has assisted the authorised bodies in creating and formulating the strategic directions in establishing and developing foreign political and economic relations. In its long research practice the Institute has established close co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has recruited a large number of diplomats and officials for the diplomatic and some other significant services that deal with international relations. IIPE is considerably different from other institutes in the country for the above mentioned role in pursuing the foreign policy.
IIPE has a rich research tradition, very fruitful scientific and publishing activities, possessing one of the largest specialised and depository libraries in international relations in South Eastern Europe, including the rich official documentations of the UN, EU, NATO and some other significant international organisations.
So far, IIPE has published over 400 books, monographs, proceedings and documentation papers.
Today, the Institute publishes journals which are reputable both in the country and in the world:
- “Međunarodni problemi - International Problems”, whose first issue appeared in 1949, and
- “Međunarodna politika”, being published since 1950.
- “Review of International Affairs”, the English edition of “Međunarodna politika” developed several years ago into a specialised journal.
- “Evropsko zakonodavstvo” (European Union Legislation) In 2002, the Institute started a new scientific journal specialised in treating the European law and practice.
Since its foundation, international co-operation of IIPE is a very significant part of its activities . It has developed regular or occasional contacts with many research, university and other scientific institutions and think tank organisations in many countries of the world. Its forms include international scientific conferences , round-tables , bilateral talks, exchange of visits, study visits, lectures by prominent foreign guests , courses for diplomats and post-graduate students, participation of IIPE associates in conferences held abroad, exchange of study papers and publications, etc. The IIPE associates have participated as experts in the state and other delegations in numerous international conferences and meetings of the international organisations such as the UN General Assembly, the Special UN Committee for the Study of the Principle of International Law on Friendly Relations, the International Law Commission, the International Law Association, ECOSOC, GATT, UNESCO, FAO, etc.
It should be stressed that for years IIPE has developed good cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development . In the 2010-2018 period, the scientific work has been intensified and several research, publishing, information and documentation projects have been started. As a result of these efforts, a large number of studies, monographs, analyses and different kinds of expertise have been completed. Currently, IIPE is carrying out the project of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development entitled “Serbia in contemporary international relations: Strategic development orientations and consolidation of Serbia’s position in international integration processes – foreign policy, international economic, legal and security aspects” (no. 179029), for the period 2011–2018.
Following the new trends and possibilities, IIPE applied and received a grant from IPA funds. Thus, in 2010/2011, together with its partner, European Institute from Sofia, Bulgaria, IIPE carried out the project “Debating Serbia’s European future”.
In 2017, IIPE became the first regional centre for the implementation of research projects within the cooperation grounded on the Initiative “16 + 1” established between the People's Republic of China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The regional centre is based on an agreement signed with the Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing.
We are convinced that in the forthcoming period IIPE scientific results will become an integral part of the European research area. In this way, the Institute's contribution could be optimally used in conducting the foreign policy and foreign economic affairs of Republic of Serbia.
|For outstanding achievements and contribution to the study of international relations, as well on the occasion of the 70 anniversary, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Serbia, No. KOPR 19 of 9th of February 2017, Institute of International Politics and Economics was awarded the Sretenje Medal.|
