On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Dr Bogdan Stojanović, Senior Research Associate at the Institute of International Politics and Economics, appeared on Tanjug TV’s morning programme.
Addressing changes in states’ nuclear capabilities from the Cold War period to the present day, Dr Stojanović discussed the development of nuclear weapons delivery systems, the importance of second-strike capability, the role of nuclear-powered submarines in maintaining strategic stability, as well as nuclear strategies and doctrines. He also addressed the issue of so-called tactical nuclear weapons, the risks associated with their potential use in contemporary armed conflicts, the significance of the nuclear taboo that has existed since 1945, and the concept of nuclear deterrence in international relations.
In a historical context, Dr Stojanović also discussed the development of the Yugoslav nuclear programme and the role of the Vinča Institute in advancing nuclear research in Yugoslavia.
