MA Ivana Dunjić, Research Assistant at the Institute of International Politics and Economics, participated from 15 to 17 June in the First Training School as part of COST Action CA24169 – Science in Diplomacy Network (SiDnet) “Frontiers of Science Diplomacy: from Technological Sovereignty to Space Geopolitics in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies,” held at the Università degli Studi dell’Insubria in Como, Italy.
COST Action CA24169 SiDnet is a European research network bringing together representatives from academia, international organizations, governments, civil society, and industry, with the aim of strengthening science diplomacy as a response to contemporary technological, environmental, and geopolitical challenges. The Action promotes multilateral cooperation based on scientific evidence, common standards, and responsible technology governance, while fostering interdisciplinary approaches and strengthening the capacities of early-career researchers. SiDnet is structured into four Working Groups, and Ivana is engaged in Working Group 1, which focuses on technological sovereignty and the governance of emerging technologies.
Throughout the three-day training school, key concepts of science diplomacy and technological governance in European and global contexts were discussed. The focus was placed on technological sovereignty, artificial intelligence and data governance, as well as the role of the European Union and the United Nations system in responsible technology governance. Topics also included anticipatory, space and quantum diplomacy, as well as strategic infrastructures, neurotechnologies, cognitive warfare, cybersecurity, and dual-use technologies, with an emphasis on geopolitical implications of emerging technologies and role of international scientific networks in the context of global fragmentation.
Participation in the training school contributed to the researcher’s professional development in the field of science diplomacy, as well as to a deeper understanding of contemporary mechanisms of global technology governance in the context of ongoing global transformations.
