Dr. Nataša Stanojević, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of International Politics and Economics, took part in the 6th International Conference on China and the United States in Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, held on May 16–17, 2026, at Turan University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
At the conference, she presented a paper titled U.S. Capital and Chinese Demand in Central Asia’s Energy Sector: Evidence from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The paper explores the varying experiences of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan with regard to great power presence in their energy sectors, with particular focus on how the roles of the United States and China prove competitive in some cases and complementary in others.
Of more than 90 submitted papers, 33 were selected for presentation. Attendees included researchers from China, India, Germany, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, and a number of other countries.
The conference marked a valuable contribution to academic exchange and to the promotion of the Institute’s research in the field of contemporary geoeconomic and international political relations.
